_       A second generation ceramic and pottery artist (Tom's mother was a New York ceramist), Tom grew up immersed in the language and understanding of clay and expressive art. Tom's dad was also an art director in Manhattan.

Tom began his professional art career as an apprentice to master potter Sensei Yasuteru Miura in Kyoto, Japan in 1975 where he lived and worked for several years. In 1977 after completing his apprenticeship, Tom had the privilege of exhibiting his work along with Miura Sensei at the Yamaki Gallery in Osaka. Soon afterwards he embarked on a Southeast Asian exploration and study of local pottery traditions, visiting in Thailand, Burma, Nepal, and India.

In Boulder he studied with Betty Woodman at the University of Colorado. Returning to Japan in 1981, Tom worked with Haruo Shimada, a master of throwing large pots, in Shimane, remote and rural coastal Japan, and also in the mountainous Tamba region north of Osaka where he perfected his understanding and practice of Mingei folk pottery under Masaaki Shibata.

It was here that Tom built a wood-fired kiln, established his studio, and joined the 800 year old Tamba pottery tradition. At this time Tom's artistic career began to fully blossom and he was introduced to the Japanese and international ceramic world. He exhibited as the premiere ceramic artist at numerous shows. His work sold extensively throughout Japan, in galleries and at upscale department stores in Tokyo, and Osaka. His masterpieces were included many times in the Japanese National Exhibition of Crafts and other prestigious juried shows.

Tom's work is still on display in the Ohara Museum of Art in Kobe, Japan, and in many private Japanese and American collections.

Returning to Boulder, Colorado in 1993 where Tom has established his studio and home, he continues to create ceramic and now bronze artwork. He is represented in Jackson Hole, WY at Horizon Fine Art, in Santa Fe at Shidoni Gallery, Palm Desert, CA at Desert Art Collection and Sculpture Garden, in Dallas at SW Gallery, and in Steamboat Springs, CO at Red Contemporary.
